POSITION SUMMARY:

The Kansas Board of Healing Arts seeks a Public Information Officer.  The Communications Officer will plan, organize, and direct an extensive long-range communications program for the agency.  The incumbent will stay informed in all aspects of the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts and serve as the agency spokesperson for all public and media inquiries.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Consults with the Board and the Executive Director on public information objectives and policy.  Plans, organizes and directs the agency’s public information program including formulation of budget proposals for the public information program.

Studies and evaluates department programs and policies from the viewpoint of public relations; advises Board and Executive Director on public reaction to programs and policies and the effective presentation and promotion of public relations activities. Researches and evaluates policies and topics of interest to the agency in order to coordinate responses to media requests or to develop speeches, presentations and other communications.

Under the direction of the Executive Director, responds to inquiries from the media or the public; provides agency’s position on major policies or issues; and arranges for or provides concise and accurate interviews for radio, television and printed publications.

Consults with agency staff and performs research in order to develop and prepare accurate and thorough news releases, stories, and articles dealing with any and all aspects of the agency’s work.  Distributes articles to television, print and radio media sources upon review and approval by the Executive Director.

Monitors/gathers information on critical news items affecting the agency, and disseminates to Board members and appropriate agency staff, or coordinates/oversees this task through the utilization of support staff.

Develops relationships with all types of media sources and deals with the media on days of public and administrative hearings and during Board, Committee or Counsel Meetings open to the public.

Assists in the preparation and editing of the Executive Director’s presentations, speeches, interviews and other communications.

Writes and prepares or oversees the preparation of agency pamphlets, brochures, newsletters, visual aids, exhibits and audio-visual materials for publication and distribution.

Assists in development of agency website providing recommendations for greater transparency.  Writes and/or edits information for the agency website and monitors information on the web site to ensure accuracy, timeliness and readability.

Promotes agency awareness by serving on committees, and representing the agency at meetings and public events.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

Baccalaureate degree, from an accredited college or university, in public relations, journalism, or related field preferred with two years professional experience or in a related field.  Knowledge of the principles and methods of planning and conducting a public information and relations program.  Working knowledge of all media used in public relations.  Strong verbal and written communications skills with an emphasis on speaking effectively in public.  Ability to write, edit, and produce various forms of promotional and informational materials.  Strong data analysis, evaluation and interpretation skills.  Ability to prioritize, plan, analyze and coordinate projects.  Ability to judge newsworthiness and reaction.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Board members, staff, media and the public.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Salary will be $40,000
This position includes the State of Kansas benefits package.
